What You See!

Bill's exterior is an accurate reflection of his interior. He is a pleasant, likeable individual who fits in well with diverse groups of people because he knows how to get along with others. If he ever does get upset, angry or sad, you can be fairly sure that he is reacting to something or someone and is not just being temperamental. Any such reaction is likely to go away once the problem is solved.

What You Don't See!

You don't have to look hard to find out what is going on in Bill's private self: all you have to do is ask. Usually it involves a concern about what he is going to do for entertainment that night or where his friends are. Don't expect to discover any deeply held secrets or emotions, unless of course there are some that he knows are important to you. In that case he may tell you what he thinks you would like to hear.

Bubbling Under the Surface!

Bill seldom hates, but when he does, he only hates what everybody else does. For example, he is likely to have a strong dislike for the Ayatollah Khomeini and Colonel Khadaffi. He is not a person of strong intractable feelings. He would change his feelings quickly, for instance, if the United States signed a peace treaty with Iran.

Special Attractions

Practicality is very important to Bill. For instance, he is more likely to buy something if it is useful or durable, and he's certainly one to avoid that which is out-of-the-ordinary. He tries to maintain his basic level-headedness in every aspect of his sojourn through life.

What Dr. Freud Has to Say About Bill

Repression is a defense mechanism that Bill is apt to rely on. To use it he unconsciously excludes painful ideas from his thinking through memory lapses, forgetting or other similar behaviors.

Habits and Addictions

Bill is your organization person. He is not really marked by a set of internally generated habits. Those repetitive behavior patterns that he has are much more likely to result from group norms than anything else. When it comes to originality, look elsewhere. Bill isn't interested in being unique, just in being accepted. If the crowd is doing a certain thing, he is the last person to swim against the current.

Career Leanings

Love of stability and normalcy characterizes Bill, who is perfectly suited for the work place. In most situations you can expect Bill to be a model employee. He gets along well with others, is easy to manage, does what is expected of him and is loyal to the organization. As long as he is treated right, he should be a pleasure to have around. You don't have to shower Bill with bonuses. Just give him a regular paycheck, good benefits and a fair retirement package. . In return, he'll give you a fair day's work for his pay. He is likely to be happy in any one of the following positions: IBM employee, civil service worker, office clerk and high school teacher.

Hidden Desires

If you new about all of Bill's secret sexual fantasies, chances are you wouldn't be shocked. He is less concerned with unlocking wild passions and cosmic orgasms than he is with finding simple companionship. Romance novels, soap operas and movies paint a picture of sexual relationships that he knows is false. He prefers to have his feet planted firmly on the ground and to keep sex in proper perspective. In fact, he may view sex itself as brief foreplay for the main event: talking with his partner.

How to Make Friends with Bill

If making friends with Bill is your goal, be prepared to share the same values as his peers, friends and family. At the very least, you'll need to act as if you enjoy doing the things that they like to do. Remember that Bill is above all a socially sensitive person, eager to conform to the expectations and opinions of his crowd, his neighbors and others close to him. Don't expect him to venture off with you too far beyond the regular haunts of his friends, unless they are going off on their own accord. Bill is a loyal group member who will rarely swim against the current of popular opinion; there is not a rebellious bone in his body. So be aware that conformity and acceptance are desirable behavior to him.

How to Influence Bill

When you want to persuade Bill of the wisdom of a certain attitude or course of action, your best best is to appeal to the values of his peer group, his religion, accepted authority figures, or if all else fails, the national good. People such as him are often influenced by endorsements from opinion leaders in a group. In fact, they actually read and believe in the testimonials made by very important people. In marketing parlance, Bill is society's middle adopter. He thinks and does what others in his group are thinking and doing. So don't ever try to convince him by using an appeal that your approach is "new or different". Bill admires and will follow only what is tried and true.
